GuideStar® Helps Missouri Community Develop Hospital Research Program
KANSAS CITY – December 17, 2010

A recent article in the Kansas City Business Journal highlights GuideStar Clinical Trials Management in an article about community hospitals developing clinical research programs.
The article profiles GuideStar® client Liberty Hospital and outlines the benefits of community hospitals conducting research. Some of these benefits include creating a new revenue stream for the hospital and physicians, building relationships with physicians and providing cutting-edge therapies to the community.
Shirley Trainor-Thomas, GuideStar’s Vice President for Business Development, outlines in the article key criteria for hospitals interested in developing a clinical trials program:
- A good mix of specialties
- An efficient institutional review board (IRB)
- Operational and financial compliance policies and procedures
- Physicians and staff trained to conduct clinical trials
- Organizational administrative support
When managed properly, revenue generated by clinical trials typically offsets the cost of creating and managing a clinical research service.
“During the past decade, the trend of where clinical research is conducted has shifted from academic medical centers to community health care settings,” Trainor-Thomas notes. “In fact, only about one-third of industry sponsored clinical research is conducted in an academic setting. Community hospitals have an advantage of initiating new trials more quickly, as well as having access to a larger general patient population, which is extremely attractive to sponsors.”
